PetSmart Charities offers grants for high-impact spay/neuter projects in two main categories:

1. “Targeted” projects focus on spay/neuter of owned cats and dogs
2. “Free-Roaming Cat” grants involve Trap-Neuter-Return (TNR) projects.

501(c)(3) non-profits and government agencies may apply for grants ranging from $10,000 – $100,000 per year for up to two years. Smaller grants will also be considered.

Bryan Kortis, Program Manger at PetSmart Charities, will present the session which will include a Questions and Answers segment. The goal is to provide a clear understanding of what is meant by “high impact spay/neuter” so eligible groups can increase their chances of securing funds.

With this in mind, we closed on a building in Robbinsville, Mercer County, on the first of September. The location consists of a 2,400 square foot building on 3.25 acres just outside of Trenton, NJ. The building is ideal in its location in that it lies at the intersection of Routes 130 and 33 and is in close proximity to the NJ Turnpike. This location provides easy access for clients and facilitates our Neuter Scooter transportation pro-gram.

The size of the location is also of very great advantage to us. While the building itself is only about two thirds the size of our Hillside Clinic, the 3.25 acres of land offers almost endless possibilities. We will be able to provide the clinic with ample parking, and the extra breathing room presents the possibility of expansion. Current renovations are being designed with future expansion in mind, and we are very ex-cited about the ability of the space to grow and change with us as time goes by.

The architectural plans for the renovation of the building will have been completed by the first of October, and renovations are projected to begin by the first of November.

The building itself was previously used as a reception hall for the Robbinsville Elks club. While little demolition will be required since the interior is largely undivided, the building will need plenty of renovations in order to function in the same way as our clinic in Hillside. The space will need to be partitioned into sections to allow for he organization of a reception area, a waiting room, surgical suites and animal holding areas. The roof and HVAC sys-tem will need to be replaced as well, and we will need to furnish the new clinic with the hundreds of items which are essential to the everyday operation of the clinic. Surgical equipment, crates and other animal holding units, computers, and furniture, among a long list of other necessities, will be needed in order to get our new clinic up and running. The fundraising support which we will need in order to accomplish this massive task will be immense.

A new FREE service will soon be available to help NJ pet owners find affordable ways to get their pets fixed. Starting July 1^st, the operators at “SPAY-NJ,” a new toll-free hotline referral service (and website) will be available weekdays from 10am-2pm to help New Jersey residents find low-cost spay and neuter services for their pets throughout NJ.

SPAY-NJ is a program of People For Animals (PFA), a non-profit animal welfare organization that promotes spay/neuter to control pet overpopulation. The SPAY NJ toll free hotline and website will provide easy access to a centralized clearinghouse of information about low cost spay and neuter services and programs available in the state of New Jersey. By working together with private veterinarians, clinics and shelters, PFA hopes to make it easier for everyone in NJ to get their pet spayed or neutered at a reasonable cost.

PFA Clinic Director, Jane Dillonaire, is excited about the launch of this new program. “For every person born in the US, 7 puppies and kittens are born. That means that for every pet to have a home, a family of four would have to own twenty-eight pets,” says Dillonaire. “Pet overpopulation is a serious problem in New Jersey. New Jersey’s shelters can’t afford to take care of all the surplus animals. The real tragedy is that one in three shelter animals have to be put down because there are just not enough homes for them all.”
